1. Respectful Verbs (尊敬語)

  • Usage: Used to show respect when talking about someone of higher status.
Plain Form Respectful Form Meaning
いる いらっしゃる be
行く いらっしゃる go
来る いらっしゃる come
食べる/飲む 召し上がる eat/drink
言う おっしゃる say
する なさる do
見る ご覧になる see
知っている ご存じだ know
  • Example:
    • 先生は今どこにいらっしゃいますか。
      Where is the teacher now?
    • 社長は何とおっしゃいましたか。
      What did the president say?
    • どうぞ召し上がってください。
      Please help yourself (to food/drink).

2. お V（ます form）になります

  • Meaning: Respectful form of verbs
  • Usage: A general pattern to make verbs respectful when special respectful verbs don’t exist.
  • Example:
    • 先生は何時にお帰りになりますか。
      What time will the teacher return?
    • 社長はお読みになりました。
      The president read it.
    • もうお聞きになりましたか。
      Have you heard already?

3. お V（ます form）ください

  • Meaning: Please do ~ (respectful request)
  • Usage: A polite way to make requests.
  • Example:
    • こちらにお掛けください。
      Please have a seat here.
    • 少々お待ちください。
      Please wait a moment.
    • お気をつけください。
      Please take care.

4. ～でいらっしゃいます

  • Meaning: Be ~ (respectful form of です)
  • Usage: Used to show respect when describing someone.
  • Example:
    • 田中先生でいらっしゃいますか。
      Are you Professor Tanaka?
    • こちらは山田様でいらっしゃいます。
      This is Mr. Yamada.

5. お＋N（owned by someone respected）

  • Meaning: Honorific prefix for nouns
  • Usage: Adding お to nouns related to the respected person.
  • Example:
    • 先生のお宅はどちらですか。
      Where is your house, sensei?
    • お名前は何とおっしゃいますか。
      What is your name?
    • お忙しいですか。
      Are you busy?
