Chapter 43: ~ そうです

Grammar key points:

  1. The pattern ～そうです is used to express “looks like ~” or “seems ~” based on visual appearance or hearsay.

    • For verbs: V [dictionary form] + そうです
      Usually it was followed by 今にも、 meaning “at any moment”,もうすぐ、 meaning “soon”, and これから、 meaning “from now on” etc. Example:
      明日雨が降るそうです。
      It (looks like) will rain tomorrow.

    • For adjectives:

      • い-adjectives: Remove the final い and add そうです
        Example:
        このケーキはおいしそうです。
        This cake looks delicious.
      • な-adjectives: Add そうです directly after the adjective
        Example:
        彼は元気だそうです。
        He looks healthy.

  2. Expression that means “to go somewhere to do something and come back”.

    1. Using the pattern: V て-form + 来る. It is used when specifying the place you will go and/or action you are going to do.

    Example:
    買い物に行って来ます。
    I am going to do some shopping and come back.

    1. Using the pattern: N (place) へ + 行って来ます. It is used when you don’t specify action you are going to do.

    Example:
    図書館へ行って来ます。 I am going to the library and will come back.

    1. Pattern: 出かけて来ます. It is used when you don’t specify the place you are going to or activity you are going to do.

    Example:
    ちょっと出かけて来ます。 I am going out for a while and will come back.
