ながら／し (Simultaneous Actions and Reasons)
Grammar
- Use case: Express that the subject performs two actions at the same time; the second (ます-stem) verb is the main action.
Pattern: V1（ます形の語幹）ながら、V2
- Example:
- 音楽を聞きながら、食事します。
- おんがくをききながら、しょくじします。
- I eat while listening to music.
- Example:
- Use case: Describe a habit or routine (as in Lesson 15), using いました for a past habit.
Pattern: V（て形）います／いました
- Example:
- 毎朝ジョギングをしています。
- まいあさジョギングをしています。
- I jog every morning.
- Example:
- Use case: List multiple reasons or characteristics, implying there are more beyond what is said.
Pattern: 普通形＋し、普通形＋し、〜
- Example:
- 色がきれいだし、デザインもいいし、この靴を買いました。
- いろがきれいだし、デザインもいいし、このくつをかいました。
- The color is pretty, and the design is nice too, so I bought these shoes.
- Example:
- Use case: Add further information or another reason to what was just said (“moreover”).
Pattern: それに、〜
- Example:
- 値段が安いし、おいしいんです。それに、駅から近いです。
- ねだんがやすいし、おいしいんです。それに、えきからちかいです。
- It’s cheap and delicious. Moreover, it’s close to the station.
- Example:
- Use case: Connect a cause to its natural consequence (“therefore, as a result”).
Pattern: 〜。それで、〜
- Example:
- 値段が安いし、おいしいんです。それで、人が多いんですね。
- ねだんがやすいし、おいしいんです。それで、ひとがおおいんですね。
- It’s cheap and delicious. That’s why it’s crowded.
