とき/と (Time and Inevitable Result)

Grammar

  1. Use case: Express “when/at the time that” — the tense of the clause before とき shows whether the sub-action is not-yet-done (dictionary/ない form) or already done (た form) relative to the main clause. Pattern: 普通形(辞書形/ない形/た形/い形/な形+な/Nの)+とき、〜
    • Example:
      • 新聞を読むとき、めがねをかけます。
      • しんぶんをよむとき、めがねをかけます。
      • I put on glasses when I read the newspaper.
      • 東京へ行ったとき、その本を買いました。
      • とうきょうへいったとき、そのほんをかいました。
      • I bought that book when I went to Tokyo (had already gone).
  2. Use case: Describe an automatic or inevitable result that follows from an action or condition. Pattern: V(辞書形/ない形)+と、〜
    • Example:
      • このボタンを押すと、お釣りが出ます。
      • このボタンをおすと、おつりがでます。
      • If you press this button, change comes out.
  3. Use case: Describe a state or natural phenomenon, marking the subject with が. Pattern: Nが Adj/V
    • Example:
      • 音が小さいです。
      • おとがちいさいです。
      • The sound is faint.
  4. Use case: Mark the location through/along which movement happens (with verbs like 歩きます, 散歩します, 渡ります). Pattern: N(場所)を V(移動)
    • Example:
      • 公園を散歩します。
      • こうえんをさんぽします。
      • I take a walk through the park.
