あげます／もらいます／くれます (Giving and Receiving Favors)

Grammar

Use case: State that someone gives something to the speaker (or the speaker’s family); the speaker cannot be the giver in this pattern. Pattern: N1（人）は（わたしに）Nをくれます
- Example:
  - 佐藤さんはわたしにクリスマスカードをくれました。
  - さとうさんはわたしにクリスマスカードをくれました。
  - Mr. Sato gave me a Christmas card.
Use case: State that the subject performs an action as a favor for someone else. Pattern: N1は N2に V（て形）あげます
- Example:
  - わたしはおじいさんに道を教えてあげました。
  - わたしはおじいさんにみちをおしえてあげました。
  - I showed grandfather the way.
Use case: State that the subject receives the favor of an action from someone; the subject is the receiver. Pattern: N1は N2に V（て形）もらいます
- Example:
  - わたしは田中さんに日本語を教えてもらいました。
  - わたしはたなかさんににほんごをおしえてもらいました。
  - Mr. Tanaka taught me Japanese (I received the favor of being taught).
Use case: State that someone does something for the speaker (or the speaker’s family) as a favor; the giver is the subject. Pattern: N1は（わたしに）V（て形）くれます
- Example:
  - 雪ちゃんは（わたしに）傘を貸してくれました。
  - ゆきちゃんは（わたしに）かさをかしてくれました。
  - Yuki lent me an umbrella.
Use case: Mark a newly introduced person/subject with が instead of は. Pattern: N（人）が V
- Example:
  - 佐藤さんがくれました。
  - さとうさんがくれました。
  - Mr. Sato gave it (to me).
Use case: Use が (not は) when the subject is an interrogative word. Pattern: 疑問詞が V
- Example:
  - 誰が手伝いに行きますか。
  - だれがてつだいにいきますか。
  - Who is going to help?
