Grammar

Use case: Provide background explanation or reason for a visible situation or a statement already made. Pattern: 普通形＋んです
- Example:
  - 顔色が悪いですね。ええ、頭が痛いんです。
  - かおいろがわるいですね。ええ、あたまがいたいんです。
  - You look pale. Yes, I have a headache (that’s why).
Use case: Ask about the reason behind an observed situation, or request more detail. Pattern: 普通形＋んですか
- Example:
  - 大阪に住んでいたんですか。
  - おおさかにすんでいたんですか。
  - (So) you used to live in Osaka?
Use case: Give a reason for something that already happened, explaining rather than simply stating a fact. Pattern: 普通形（た形）＋んです
- Example:
  - すみません、遅れました。バスが来なかったんです。
  - すみません、おくれました。バスがこなかったんです。
  - Sorry I’m late. The bus didn’t come (that’s why).
Use case: Open a topic with background context before making a hesitant request, offer, or question. Pattern: 普通形＋んですが、〜
- Example:
  - 手紙を書いたんですが、ちょっと見ていただけませんか。
  - てがみをかいたんですが、ちょっとみていただけませんか。
  - I wrote a letter — could you take a look at it for me?
Use case: Make a very polite request, higher in courtesy than 〜てください. Pattern: V（て形）いただけませんか
- Example:
  - 漢字の読み方を教えていただけませんか。
  - かんじのよみかたをおしえていただけませんか。
  - Could you teach me how to read this kanji?
Use case: Ask for advice on the appropriate action to take. Pattern: 疑問詞＋V（た形）らいいですか
- Example:
  - どうしたらいいですか。
  - どうしたらいいですか。
  - What should I do?
