Noun-Modifying Clauses

Grammar

  1. Use case: Modify a noun with a verb or adjective clause placed directly before it, plain form throughout (な-adj: だ→な, N: だ→の). Pattern: 普通形+N
    • Example:
      • 東京へ行く人
      • とうきょうへいくひと
      • the person who is going to Tokyo
      • 背が高くて、髪が黒い人
      • せがたかくて、かみがくろいひと
      • a person who is tall and has black hair
  2. Use case: Turn a whole sentence into a modifying clause that describes a noun (a relative clause); the modified noun drops its particle. Pattern: 普通形の文+N
    • Example:
      • わたしが先週見た映画
      • わたしがせんしゅうみたえいが
      • the movie I watched last week
      • わたしが明日会う友達
      • わたしがあしたあうともだち
      • the friend I am meeting tomorrow
  3. Use case: Mark the subject inside a noun-modifying clause with が (not は). Pattern: N1が V(修飾節)N2
    • Example:
      • ミラーさんが作ったケーキ
      • ミラーさんがつくったケーキ
      • the cake that Mr. Miller made
  4. Use case: Express time available, or a scheduled appointment/errand, using a dictionary-form clause before 時間/用事/約束. Pattern: V(辞書形)+時間/用事/約束
    • Example:
      • 朝ご飯を食べる時間がありません。
      • あさごはんをたべるじかんがありません。
      • I don’t have time to eat breakfast.
      • 映画を見る約束があります。
      • えいがをみるやくそくがあります。
      • I have an appointment to watch a movie.
