Chapter 40: 〜て、〜で、〜ので、途中で

Grammar key points

1. Sentence to present cause (first part) and consequence (second part) resulted by the cause.

Pattern:

Unlike the 〜から、〜 pattern, this pattern has several constraints:

• The second part (consequence) cannot express volition: expressing feeling, states, or situation in the past.
  Example:
  疲れて、寝ました。 (Correct)
  つかれて、ねました 疲れて、寝ましょう。 (Incorrect)
  つかれて、ねましょう
• The first part and second part are sequential events.
  Example:
  雨が降って、道がぬれました。 (Correct)
  あめがふって、みちがぬれました

1. Particle で to indicate reason or cause.　　 Pattern:　N で 〜

The N(oun) used in this pattern expresses a reason or cause from natural phenomena, events, and happenings. like じこ、あらし、かぜ、ねつ etc. Example:
事故で電車が遅れました。
じこででんしゃがおくれました。

1. ので to express reason or cause (more polite than から)
   Pattern:

Example:

• 疲れたので、寝ます。
  つかれたので、ねます。
• 雨が降っているので、出かけません。
  あめがふっているので、でかけません。
• 風邪なので、学校を休みます。
  かぜなので、がっこうをやすみます。
• 先生なので、忙しいです。
  せんせいなので、いそがしいです。

1. Expression 途中で　 to indicate “in the middle of ~”, “on the way ~”
   Pattern: N (place, time) + 途中で 〜 Example:
   • 学校へ行く途中で、友達に会いました。
     がっこうへいくとちゅうで、ともだちにあいました
   • 映画の途中で、電話がかかってきました。
     えいがのとちゅうで、でんわがかかってきました。
